Manufacturing

A small manufacturing company got behind in filing it’s corporate tax returns by five years.  The CRA had assessed them $647,000 in tax and almost $200,000 in penalties and interest.  We filed the past due returns but CRA refused to accept them and forced the client to go to tax court.  A lawyer told them it would cost $25,000 just to start the case.  The client asked me to handle it and it took six months but cost less than $10,000.  The final amount owing to CRA was $15.

Personal Tax

Linda had a good job with a large company and she worked partially form home.  When she came to us, she brought a CRA garnishment letter for $6,000 in personal tax that her employer was deducting from her pay.  I had her sign an authorization right away so I could access her CRA account.

I convinced CRA to hold off on the garnishment for 30 days.

Linda was six years behind in filing her personal tax returns.  It took a couple of weeks to gather all of the information and file the late returns.  I also filed adjustments for the years she worked from home and didn’t claim any expenses.

It took almost six months for CRA to process her returns but in the end, Linda received back all the money her employer had to deduct plus over $29,000 in tax refunds plus interest and penalties.

Connections

Part of my work involves connecting people together who can help each other out.  One of my clients was having a problem sourcing a metal part for an assembly they supplied to an automotive customer.  I brought the part to a manufacturing client to have him quote the part confidentially and produce some samples.  Both companies were very pleased with the deal, and they’ve been doing over $200,000 in sales a year for almost ten years.

Divorce

I was retained to help a business client catch up with almost ten years of tax returns plus personal returns and the divorce case for the owner.  Her ex-husband had been running the company for several years and was an ex CRA auditor.  It took almost six months to sort through the information, file the returns and work with CRA on both the business and personal tax returns.  They received just over $100,000 in refunds.  Then I spent two days being cross-examined by the ex-husbands’ lawyer who was claiming over $500,000 in severance pay and spousal support for his client.  After some very aggressive questioning on his part about some documents he claimed never existed, I produced both the documents and a statement from CRA that they had verified the documents and my calculations.

The ex-husbands lawyer went silent.  Then he asked for a brief recess.  My clients’ lawyer said to me ‘You had this all along!  You waited for him to get to it for two days and then after he lied about it, you brought it out.  His case just fell apart.  I’m glad you’re on our side’ They settled on less than $100,000 in severance pay and support and allowed it to be paid by the company which made it deductible and had to show on a T4 slip.

CRA ended up collecting it all in back tax owed by the ex.
